I’m a big fan of stereograms and 3D art in general. A few years ago, I noticed that in the 10s of thousands of photographs I’ve taken in my life, there are many pairs of photos that make “accidental” stereograms — that is, the photo pairs are of the same subject but taken far enough apart in space that the subject can be seen in 3D.
The photos are filled with little flaws and imperfections like people moving in between shots and odd perspectives, but when the photos work, they are really intriguing.
I’ve since started taking more intentional stereograms when I’m out and about with my camera, but the discovery made me wonder about using the vast resources of the internet to make more of these pictures. I mean, as a group, we’ve all been tourists everywhere there is to go, and we all go snap, snap, snap as we walk along our way.
So as I hobby, I’ve started piecing together stereograms out of the multitude of photographs of famous places that Google knows about and I’m posting the results here.
